چکیده
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is one of the most common chronic diseases and a major cause of morbidity and mortality. An imbalance between oxidants and antioxidants (oxidative stress) has been proposed as a critical event in the pathogenesis of COPD. The aim of the present study was to find whether an oxidative stress occurs at the clinical onset of COPD and some other pulmonary diseases through the level of lipid peroxidation products in plasma and the activity of CAT an important extracellular antioxidant enzyme. We evaluated a biomarker of oxidative stress malondialdehyde, a lipid peroxidation derived product (MDA) and an enzymatic antioxidant catalase (CAT) in COPD patients and healthy controls. The marker of oxidative stress was found to be significantly (p<0.001) higher in COPD patients when compared with control group. COPD patients had a significant (p<0.0001) increase in antioxidant enzime CAT as compared with control group. Our results show that oxidative stress is an important pathophysiologic change in COPD.

An oxidant/antioxidant imbalance is thought to play an important role in the pathogenesis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). We hypothesized that antioxidant capacity reflected by erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase (GPx), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activities, and serum levels of the lipid peroxidation product malondialdehyde (MDA), may be related to the severit...

Skeletal muscle dysfunction contributes to poor exercise performance in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Increased oxygen radicals and nitric oxide (NO) have been proposed as mechanisms. In this study, we assessed the levels of protein oxidation (carbonyl formation), lipid peroxidation (4-hydroxy-2-nonenal formation), catalase and Mn-superoxide dismutase (Mn-SOD) expr...

Background & Aims: Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a chronic diffuse interstitial lung disease, which has symptoms such as coughing and shortness of breath. The average survival duration in these patients is estimated as 3 years after the onset of symptoms. Today, the therapeutic approach used in IPF cases is the usage of chemical or herbal antioxidants in order to elim...
متن کاملA prospective randomized controlled study: Theophylline on oxidative stress and steroid sensitivity in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients
Objective Oxidative stress is involved in the pathogenesis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Corticosteroid fails to suppress inflammation and oxidative stress due to steroid resistance. Theophylline has an effect on histone deacetylase (HDAC) activity and improves steroid sensitivity in COPD. Given changes in oxidative stress associated with diminished corticosteroid effects, a ...

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is associated with cerebrovascular abnormalities and an overproduction of reactive oxygen species. We hypothesised that COPD patients have oxidant-related cerebrovascular dysfunction. Our main objective was to evaluate cerebrovascular reactivity and its relationship with oxidative stress in females with COPD. We studied eight females with moderate CO...
